Southern California-based alt-rock band Movements brings us back to their roots with their newest single “Where I Lay.” Instrumentally, this song reminds fans of their beloved 2017 debut album, “Feel Something.” With hits like “Daylily” and “Full Circle”, “Feel Something” was an instant classic in the emo scene.

While “Feel Something” featured raw, guitar heavy tracks and an even mix of screaming and singing from frontman Pat Miranda, their sophomore and junior albums began to move away from this. “No Good Left to Give” felt like the next natural step in the band’s evolution, dialing back the guitar in favor of captivating bass lines and a more explicit focus on the band’s genius lyricism. Their most recent album “Ruckus!” took a “dancier” approach with tracks like “A.M.P”, and featured the classic melancholic sound Movements is known for with “Tightrope.”

Movements’ instrumental sound has expectedly evolved since their debut album, but fans are saying that “Where I Lay” has a “Feel Something” vibe that they’ve been missing.

“Where I Lay” explores themes of not belonging, and does so beautifully with lyrics like “In the garden where I lay, all the flowers bloom but me. I’m staring at the sun and taking rain, still, I can’t help but feel so out of place.”

Miranda says, “‘Where I Lay’ is one of those songs that was tough for me to write. Lyrically, it’s really emotionally vulnerable and it had me revisiting places with my writing that I hadn’t explored in a while. It’s for anyone else out there who feels like they’ve never quite fit right in the world. This one is for the outcasts.”

Thematically, “Where I Lay” exists in the same world as Movements’ previous single “Afraid to Die,” which was released June 21, 2024. Miranda even goes so far as to say that the two songs are extensions of one another.

“Where I Lay” is released just under two weeks before their next North American tour with Citizen, Scowl, and Downward, which kicks off March 1.
